सुप्रसिद्ध पार्श्व गायिका सुमन कल्याणपुर जी का जन्म 28 जनवरी 1937 को ढाका, बांग्लादेश में हुआ था। 31 मई 2026 को 89 वर्ष की आयु में मुंबई में उनका निधन हो गया, जिसने संगीत जगत को एक अपूरणीय क्षति पहुँचाई है। उनकी आवाज़ का जादू आज भी लाखों संगीत प्रेमियों के दिलों में जीवित है।

एक कठिन दौर और सुमन जी का योगदान

फिल्म इंडस्ट्री के इतिहास में एक ऐसा दौर आया था जब महान गायिका लता मंगेशकर जी और मोहम्मद रफ़ी साहब के बीच गीतों की रॉयल्टी को लेकर अनबन हो गई थी। लता जी का मानना था कि गायकों को उनके गीतों की रॉयल्टी मिलनी चाहिए ताकि बुढ़ापे में उन्हें आर्थिक तंगी का सामना न करना पड़े, जबकि रफ़ी साहब को कुछ लोगों ने यह कहकर भ्रमित कर दिया था कि मेहनत का पैसा तो मिल ही गया, अब रॉयल्टी की आवश्यकता नहीं है। इस विवाद के कारण दोनों दिग्गजों ने साथ गाना बंद कर दिया था।

उस दौर में फिल्म जगत को एक ऐसी आवाज़ की तलाश थी जो लता जी की कमी पूरी कर सके। तब सुमन कल्याणपुर जी सामने आईं। उनकी आवाज़ और गायन का अंदाज़ लता जी से इतना मिलता-जुलता था कि कई बार श्रोता और यहाँ तक कि रेडियो उद्घोषक (announcers) भी भ्रमित हो जाते थे। अन्नू कपूर ने भी अपने एक साक्षात्कार में साझा किया था कि शुरुआत में कई सुपरहिट गीतों को लोग लता-रफ़ी का गाना समझ बैठते थे, जबकि वे सुमन कल्याणपुर और रफ़ी साहब की आवाज़ में होते थे।

संघर्ष और विरासत

छह वर्षों के उस दौर में सुमन जी ने मोहम्मद रफ़ी साहब और अन्य गायकों के साथ कई सुपरहिट गीत गाकर संगीत प्रेमियों को मंत्रमुग्ध कर दिया। बाद में जब लता जी और रफ़ी साहब के बीच सुलह हुई, तो दुर्भाग्यवश कुछ राजनीतिक चालबाजियों के कारण सुमन जी को हिंदी फिल्मों से दरकिनार कर दिया गया। एक अत्यंत मधुर आवाज़ को फिल्म इंडस्ट्री से दूर कर दिया गया, लेकिन उस दौरान उन्होंने जो अनमोल रत्न हमें दिए, वे आज भी संगीत प्रेमियों के लिए किसी थाती से कम नहीं हैं। हिंदी के साथ-साथ उन्होंने मराठी और अन्य भाषाओं में भी अपना अमूल्य योगदान दिया है।
